Sharon is a 31 year old physician. She just started a new job as a junior doctor in a small clinic. This is not just a new job, but a new city for Sharon. She just graduated and has also just bought a new home.
One morning Sharon left her home early so she would not be late for work. After turning a corner she suddenly began to feel as if she might die. Her heart began to poiund, she felt nauseated, dizzy, and short of breath. She pulled the car over to the side of the road and held the steering wheel tightly to try and calm herself. The feelings increased in intensity for a few minutes and the began to decrease. When she arrived at work she discussed her experience with her colleagues who recommended some relaxation techniques.
Over the next several days she became increasingly anxious about driving. Five weeks after the initial episode, Sharon had another attack. After this one Sharon found it impossible to drive her car to work.
